Dear Hunter,

Today we went and collected some hens to add to our chicken coop. It was a bit tricky for us to find them as we are in the covid pandemic world, where restrictions are tight and many people want to become self sufficient.

Watching you get excited when we opened the box and let them roam free in their pen was priceless. Your face lit up and all you wanted to do was hold them. You love their feathery tails and red crowns.

I love how you squeal when you’re excited.

You have so much life that shines through your eyes. Everything is a new and even better adventure then the previous one.

You look at the animals with such a happy grin. I love watching you watch the cockatoos fly over head, the horses wander in the distance, you spot the moon when it’s out at anytime of the day and you moo when you spot a cow.

You’re constantly looking around and seeing every part of this life that you can, absorbing, processing and translating. You amaze me. All those deep thoughts, satisfied emotions, you my sweet boy are going to do great things in this world. You are going to do exactly what you want to do and I hope it brings you the utmost happiness as you deserve it. You’re the most strong willed, clever little person I’ve ever seen. I’m going to be right here with you along the whole way. When ever you need me I’ll be there.

Never change bubba. I love you to the moon and back.

The day you were born

Dear Hunter,

Remembering the day you were born brings me so much warm and excitement.

My waters broke at 5am one Wednesday morning. I leaped out of bed so fast thinking I’d wet the bed, my legs nearly went through the Gyprock wall. Your daddy sat bolt up right not knowing what had happened as I’d created a loud thud.

That day your daddy called off work at the C.Ex club in Coffs Harbour, and we checked everything out with the midwives. The intense contractions didn’t start coming on until after lunch time. They started off small from 11am and progressed from there. By 9pm that Wednesday night I was feeling then very strongly. I wanted to go into the hospital by then to check everything’s as going along safely.

I was only 1cm dialated which I though was a joke. That night was tough to get comfortable. I had 7 hot showers as that was all that helped give me a rest from the pain and strong contractions. By 7am I was only 3cm dialated. My heart sunk as it had been a tiring night. Your daddy had stayed with me every step of the way.

Thinking we would have had you in our arms already the midwives at the rural hospital of macksville made the call to send us up to Coffs Harbour base, as they needed to start us on antibiotics due to my waters being broken for longer then 24 hours. That was an ambulance ride I’ll never forget. Laying flat on a stretcher and you pushing down on my spine, I felt like my belly was ripping. When I got to coffs I jumped off the stretcher so fast I scared the staff.

We had a scare when they lay me flat to check on you and your heart rate dropped low, they started to prepare for an emergency caesarean but by the time they sat me up you had recovered.

We continued on for the day 2 failed epidurals, hormone drip (oxytocin), more checks, hundreds of contractions that were very intense, but with everyone meant we were getting closer to seeing you. We had only dilated to 6cm by that afternoon on the Thursday. Then the call was made for a caesarean. I think your daddy and I were very relieve as you must have been worn out from the whole journey and we were too. By 10:25pm that Thursday night 20th August 2020 (the year of covid lockdowns and restrictions), you entered our world. The second we heard your cry we cried tears of happiness and relief to know you were safe.

You weighed 8 pound 8 ounces or 3.8kg, 52cm long, you had dark hair, and the sweetest face. You were a boy as well. We didn’t know what you were going to be. that was an even bigger and exciting surprise.

You made us the most happiest people in the world. We love you so much Hunter King and you are stuck with us loving, hugging and kissing you for a very long time. thank you for being you.

You love music and dancing. You are a little groover.

Due date

Dear Hunter,

Today was your due date 1 year ago. 14/8/2020. I was all belly in my pregnancy with you. I loved every feeling of being pregnant. Just knowing that you were with me everywhere I went made me feel the utmost content. Besides your daddy, I’d never had anyone love or understand me like him and you. I already knew you were special the first time I saw you on that first ultrasound at 9 weeks.

Every kick made me smile. You made everyday exciting. When I was working as a nurse in theatres in Coffs Harbour, each day I would stop and just feel you moving, or I’d listen to your heartbeat with a stethoscope.

This time one year ago I was so excited to meet you, everyday I was waking up wondering if today would be the day. I still didn’t know if you were a boy or a girl yet, although I did have a big feeling I knew you were a boy. I craved way too much protein and meat through your pregnancy.

You held in there until the 20th of August. Only 6 days late. Who could blame you, it’s so warm inside my belly.

Fun fact: before pregnancy I’d eat 2 avocados a day. During pregnancy I couldn’t eat them, as the smell would make me feel sick. But you actually love avocados, it’s your favourite food at the moment which I’m glad as I thought you might have been turned off them.
